The appearance of the shadows is a central feature in our work. The shadow appears where objects block the light. The shadow always lies behind things or objects. It is a metaphorical concept that exists simultaneously in real and virtual worlds. The shadow is the blueprint of indexicality. Where one can see a shadow, one will always find light. There is no shadow without light. Yet, if one seeks to realize and see the light behind and in front of the things casting shadows, one needs to recognize the objects and look at their shadows. The shadow transition during the day is a metaphor for the ways trauma and memories evolve in history. Looking at the shadows is a way of peering into one’s darker past and present aspects and resentments; it is a way to confront what is usually overlooked, whitewashed, and set aside. In this regard, the shadows provide an opportunity to become aware of one’s fears and traumas, to embrace one’s hurtful memories, and to acknowledge them. It is the path to healing and transforming fear into unconditional love for oneself, others, and the world.
