Under Sea Heart Beats

Three-channel video with sound

Liverpool, UK
2024

The video and sound installation constitutes a trio of three screens connected through the rhythm of Nadia Kaabi-Linke‘s heartbeats. The ripples on the water seam take on the vibration of the life drum in her chest. The piece is an audiovisual meditation on the meaning of water in our lives and geographical connections.

The last source of life that connects both cities, Tunis and Liverpool, is maritime life, the pulsating hearts in the sea, and the pulse of people living on the coasts who depend on maritime ecologies. These are at permanent risk of being wiped out by the fishing industry and climate change. On a political level, it also reminds us of thousands of immigrants whose hearts ceased to beat in the waters of the Mediterranean. Yet despite all the differences between the North and the South, the one thing that links and connects us is the water. Every adult‘s body consists of ca. 70%, which reflects the proportion of water- covered surfaces on Earth. Europe and Africa are not separated but connected through water. Water anchors us with our planet, the water inside ourselves, or the water around us that connects our continents. The work reflects the simple truth that when life came out of water, water is life.
